CLASSES
1. Using Hand Designed and Ethnic Fabrics (Japanese, African, and Indonesian) in your collection. This one- (or more) day class offers 5 formats for using that special fabric you have collected and have been waiting for the inspiration to use . The teacher will offer individual help with design decisions and fabric choices to help you create your own unique results. If your special fabrics lend themselves to other formats I will help you with those decisions also. Reference see: Quilters’ Newsletter Magazine article by Reynola Pakusich, June 2007.

- Support fabric in a value and texture range, of colors selected from your special fabric. (All fabrics need to be pre-washed and ironed)

- Two yards of pellon fleece or flannel for designing on-white or black

2. New York Beauty Class using the foundation piecing method. Participants will have the opportunity to complete an 8” block of the New York Beauty design. One day workshop. As a two-day workshop, participants will begin to explore ways of using several of their blocks in a wall piece or small quilt. Reference see: Patchwork Persuasion, by Joen Wolfram, page 70.

- Iron and ironing surface (one for every two particiapants)
- Rotary cutter, rulers, and cutting mat
- Fabrics- Lights and mediums or mediums and darks (do a squint test to make sure you have value definition between the lights and mediums or mediums and darks for the points.
- One or two 10” squares of similar value for the block corners
- Optional: portable design wall about 48” wide, and/or flannel or fleece for designing on.
3. Fabric Play: This one day class demonstrates the process from that selected, wonderful theme fabric, analyzing the support fabrics that make it work, suggesting types of blocks or quilt designs for the fabric run, and finally the value strategies of arranging into the quilt top. The second part of the class is devoted to the participants going through this same process with guidance of the teacher and interaction between quilters. Each person will be expected to bring a theme fabric with support fabrics for this discussion.
4. Meandering Paths/Serpentine Class . In this 1 or 2 day popular class participants will learn to machine piece two sizes of curves with a versatile block to form diagonal lines or meandering paths. This class devotes much time to fabric choices, and analyzing, design composition and value strategies on a fleece wall.

- Fabric run:
- Might be an expanded color run; example: blue (light, medium and dark values) including blue-greens to blue-violets
- Perhaps a collection of "special fabrics" or fabrics you want to "show off" in a quilt. Be sure to bring some "support" fabrics for them (i.e. color related, but lower design value contrast, such as tone-on-tones)
- Design collection; example: a wide variety of circles, dots or plaids

5. Circle Play. This 1,2,3, or 5 day class allows participants to use their collection of special fabrics with circle unit format. In this class you use circles on pieced triangle background blocks to create mystery in your designs by learning to recognize and control fabric textural lines. Construction involves simple piecing and hand or machine appliqué. 6. Wheel of Mystery. (new class) This 1 or 2 day class is planned to help the quilter explore some of the possibilities of the traditional quilt block sometimes called Wheel of Mystery. The teacher will present some color strategies for you to begin to consider for using with your own fabrics. The block design allows you, with the teacher’s help, to experience machine piecing gentle curves that create the overlapping mystery circles. Your class time can be used to create you own design variation or, using a minimum of 2 fabric choices, you can complete several blocks toward a finished project.

7. Overlapping Circle Play . (new class) (1, 2, 3 or 5-day class) Using the teacher’s class- handout pattern enjoy developing the interplay of fabrics to create circles that appear to overlap. With the teacher’s guidance some parts of your circles will appear to lap behind while others will appear to lap in front of the next circle. Come and enjoy seeing and learning control of these circles. Ability to machine-piece gentle curves is suggested for this class. [In a 3+day workshop the students will design their own Circle Play quilt and begin fabric selection and piecing].

8. Using Photos. (new class) For “confident beginner” experience. This workshop is planned to help the quilter explore the many opportunities for using personal photos in quilts. Several ways for getting the photos onto various fabrics will be suggested as well as many ideas for incorporating the photos into traditional and contemporary quilts. The first session will offer individual design suggestions for the photos brought to class. The second session will focus on fabric and construction techniques. Computer skills will be helpful but not necessary for the class.
